«Twenty-five years on we have become a a fully-fledged institution of over ten thousand students, with a prominent place in international rankings and playing a vital role in the cities where it is has campuses.»

Josep Eladi Baños Díez

Rector of UVic-UCC

Celebrating anniversaries is joyful time for all institutions. UVic-UCC is no exception, and our first twenty-five years are an opportunity to remember where we came from and what it took to get here. After the creation of the Literary University of Vic in 1599, and its suppression by the Decret de Nova Planta only 118 years later, the people of Vic struggled to recover their university. This was finally achieved when the Parliament of Catalonia unanimously passed a bill in 1997. It would take a long time to acknowledge all those who have made it possible and I just want to mention, on behalf of all of them, Mayor Jacint Codina and Rector Ricard Torrents.

From that University questioned by some, twenty-five years later we have become a a full institution with more than ten thousand students, with a prominent place in international rankings and playing a vital role in the cities where it is has campuses.. At present, it is made up of a federation of four foundations and has a pre-eminent position in the loose geographical region known as central Catalonia. It has proven to be a driving force for the economy, for cultural activities and social interventions. Congratulations to the entire university community, past and present, for making this success possible.

«The University has consolidated, with over thirty degree courses and prestigious academic activities in the fields of social sciences, health and education, among others.»

Anna Erra Solà

President of the Board of Trustees of the Balmes University Foundation

The celebration of the 25th anniversary of UVic-UCC is a great success for many reasons. Today’s University grew out of the Teacher Training School, the Balmes University Foundation (founded in 1985) and in the university schools of Teaching, Nursing and Business Studies. In 1997, the Parliament of Catalonia recognised the University of Vic and 20 years later the first medical students arrived, a great step forward for the University and the city, together with the University Hospital and the first seeds of future high-impact initiatives such as the Health Campus.

During this period, the University has consolidated, with over thirty degree courses and prestigious academic activities in the fields of social sciences, health and education, among others. The University has grown beyond our city to embrace vibrant municipalities such as Manresa and Granollers, strengthening the services of the region of central Catalonia in today’s federated University.

Together the Vic City Council and the University are leading this unique, shared project that benefits the university community and society in general. This partnership means that teachers, students and professionals experience the city as a citywide university campus.

And the future is promising, especially in the light of recent international recognition, such as entry for the first time in the THE World University Rankings, in 4th place in Catalonia and 6th in Spain.

For all that has been and all that is to come, I wish long life to UVic-UCC!

«All of these challenges, and many more, are the result of the hard work and perseverance of all who have been part of UVic-UCC at some point.»

Anna Sabata Aliberch

Secretary General of UVic-UCC

This year we are celebrating 25 years of our University, with pride as a university community for our journey so far.

25 years may not seem like much, but the growth of UVic-UCC over this period has been spectacular. Little did we imagine that today there would be over ten thousand full degree students in our classrooms or that we would have such strong regional links as we do today. All of these challenges, and many more, are the result of the hard work and perseverance of all who have been part of UVic-UCC at some point.

That is why we hope that the 25th anniversary programme will display the collaboration of all members of the university community: trustees, teaching and research staff, service staff, alumni and students. We also want activities to be carried out in the three UVic-UCC campus cities: Vic, Manresa and Barcelona.

The programme of events, at the end of the booklet, runs from spring to autumn, coinciding with the inauguration of the 2022-2023 academic year, 25 years after the first academic year of the University. of Vic.

Thank you to all members of the university community. For 25 years and many more at UVic-UCC!
